Do you need a referral to see a chiropractor?

When you can book a chiropractor directly, when your insurance may need a referral, and the board that sets the rules in every state.

The short answer

In general, no: chiropractors are licensed to see patients directly, so you can usually book without a medical doctor’s referral. What often needs a referral is your insurance – for example many Medicare Advantage plans and VA care. Check your plan before the first visit.

Who may need a referral

  • Medicare Advantage members. Plans may require a referral to see a specialist and usually expect you to use in-network providers (Medicare.gov).
  • Veterans using VA care. VA chiropractic care is by referral from a VA primary care or specialty provider (VA).
  • HMO and some employer plans. Many plans set their own referral or prior-approval rules. Ask your plan.
  • Workers’ comp and auto claims. Your insurer or employer may have its own process. Ask before you start.

Questions to ask your plan

  1. Do I need a referral or prior approval to see a chiropractor?
  2. Is this chiropractor in network?
  3. How many visits are covered, and do they need re-approval?
